I made this sword as a birthday gift for a friend. It is a version of the Sun Blade from Dungeons and Dragons. This version has a golden hilt which can be activated so that a blade made of pure sunlight appears out of the hilt.

This is the template for the sword. I based the hilt and the blade on images a friend sent me. I uploaded those images into Adobe Illustrator and outlined them. I then adjusted the size to match the dimensions of a long sword and printed the template.

A close up of the hilt. It was first shaped out of EVA foam and then worbla was placed over top. There is a line of nuts that have been glued into the inside of the hilt so the blade could be screwed in and out. This allows the sword to have the feel of being able to “activate” it to bring out the blade.

This is the blade and the hilt put together. I shaped the foam of the blade to resemble a double edged long sword. there is a bolt at the end of the blade which can screw into the nuts in the hilt. There is also a wooden dowel running up the center of the blade in order to give the blade a bit more structure with how long it is.

After priming the hilt with gesso I painted it with gold acrylic paint.

Next I painted symbols of the god Pelos from Dungeons and Dragons onto the hilt to represent the fact that Pelos gifted the sword to the character that uses it in game.

The blade of the sword was painted a bright yellow in order to look like it was made out of pure sunlight.

Here is the finished blade and hilt side by side.

Finally, the completed sword with the blade and the hilt connected together.
